I fly Thessaloniki to Athens almost every month, so this is the guide every visitor asks me for. Skip Plaka for dinner (tourist tax). Stay in Koukaki or Pangrati, five minutes from the Acropolis, half the price, all the best restaurants. Buy the €30 combo ticket for the Acropolis + 6 other sites (Ancient Agora, Roman Forum, Hadrian's Library, Kerameikos, Olympieion, Aristotle's Lyceum), it pays for itself in two stops. Go up the Acropolis at 8am OR 6pm (avoid noon). Eat souvlaki at Kostas (Agia Irini square, €3) and dinner at Diporto in the central market (€18, no menu, no English, perfect). Three days, €360 if you fly in from abroad, €60 with the train from Thessaloniki.

A tiny Cycladic village hidden on the north slope of the Acropolis. Whitewashed, silent, no cars.
