Belgrade is gritty, raw, and shockingly cheap. I stayed in Savamala (the gentrifying riverside district) for €40 a night, ate steak ćevapi for €6, and partied at the splavovi, floating clubs anchored on the Sava river, until 6am with no cover charge. Kalemegdan fortress at sunset is one of the most underrated views in Europe: two rivers meeting, the old city behind you, a beer in your hand for €1.50. Day trip to Novi Sad and the Petrovaradin fortress (EXIT festival site) by train for €8. Three days, €340 from Thessaloniki (often via Bucharest) including flights.
