How I did it

Premium without the price tag.

Bratislava is the perfect Vienna add-on, €15 bus, 1 hour door-to-door. I went for a day and stayed for two. The old town is tiny and gorgeous: pastel baroque facades, a hilltop castle, and weird quirky bronze statues (the Cumil 'man at work' poking out of a manhole is the city's mascot). Slovak goulash + dumplings + craft beer = €12. The UFO observation deck on the SNP bridge is €9 and gives you a 360° view of three countries. Skip the hotel and day-trip from Vienna unless you want to drink like a king for €30 a night.

  • 05Slavin WWII memorial, best skyline view
