How I did it

Premium without the price tag.

Milan gets a bad rap from people who never leave the train station. I gave it 48 hours and left in love. Stayed in Navigli for €75 a night, canal-side, no cars, all the best aperitivo bars on one street. €10 spritz gets you an all-you-can-eat buffet that's basically dinner. Climbed to the Duomo rooftop at golden hour (€16, stairs not lift), wandered the Brera district at night, and saw The Last Supper after booking 3 weeks ahead (€15). Total spend: €380. Milan rewards you when you slow down.

Highlights

What to do, where to go.

  • 01Aperitivo on Navigli canals (18:00/21:00)
  • 02Duomo rooftop at sunset, take the stairs
  • 03Pinacoteca di Brera (free first Sunday)
  • 04Espresso standing at Marchesi 1824
  • 05Tram 1, vintage 1920s wooden carriages
