Two-hour flight from Thessaloniki (often via Bucharest), €60 return. I landed Friday night, was eating Shopska salad and drinking Bulgarian wine for €12 by 9pm. Sofia is 2,000 years old, Roman ruins under the metro stations, Byzantine churches next to brutalist communist blocks, and the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky cathedral that stops you mid-street. Free walking tour every morning (tip €5), street food in the market for €3, and a 30-min bus to Vitosha mountain where you can hike to a waterfall for free. Two days, €220 including flights. Sofia is criminally overlooked.
