How I did it

Premium without the price tag.

Everyone tells you Venice is overpriced and overcrowded. They're half right. I stayed in Cannaregio, 10 minutes from San Marco but a different planet, at a small boutique hotel for €95 a night. I woke up at 6am, had the Rialto Bridge to myself, ate cicchetti standing at the bar for €2 each, and took the local vaporetto №1 down the Grand Canal at sunset for €1.50 (use the 75-minute tourist pass smart). Three days, zero gondola scam, total €620 from Thessaloniki (often via Bucharest) including flights. Venice premium = local timing, not bigger spending.

Highlights

What to do, where to go.

  • 01Stay in Cannaregio, not San Marco
  • 02Rialto & St Mark's before 8am, zero crowds
  • 03Cicchetti crawl: All'Arco, Cantina Do Mori
  • 04Vaporetto №1 sunset ride down Grand Canal
  • 05Day-trip to Burano (€7.70 return ferry)
